10 Questions with Michael Ritchie, MD

We’re proud to welcome Dr. Michael Ritchie to NMC Health Cardiology Specialists. In this “10 Questions” feature, Dr. Ritchie shares his journey from a family of farmers to medicine, his “patient-first” philosophy, and why he chose to bring his expertise to NMC Health.

Why are you excited to join NMC Health?

“It gives me the opportunity to be rewarded for sharing my gift of excellent cardiovascular care to the deserving members of a small community and to continue the overarching theme of my professional life of developing premier cardiovascular programs in the rural, agricultural, heart of America.”

Why did you choose a career in healthcare?

“I didn’t choose it. God chose it for me. I wanted to be a veterinarian, an occupation admired far more by my family of farmers than the medical profession. I was unable to get into vet school because my academic and athletic and work responsibilities did not allow for the amount of volunteer time with a veterinarian that was required for an application. So, I went into medicine.”

What is your specialty, and why did you choose it?

“I am an interventional cardiologist with additional training and experience in device implantation, structural cardiology, and PVD therapy. I chose cardiology because of all specialties it appealed to both my mental aptitude and my physical attributes. In patients with cardiovascular disease, I can oftentimes make the diagnosis by simply speaking with and examining the patient with my stethoscope, then many times be able to successfully intervene upon the problem.”

What inspires you to do what you do every day?

“I feel I have been given a gift to deliver excellent cardiovascular therapy to people under my care. I am so grateful for how rewarding and fulfilling is the sharing of that gift.”

What is your favorite thing about working with patients?

“Being part of their lives.”

What is your top priority when providing healthcare?

“Doing what’s best for the patient.”

What are your favorite things to do outside of the office?

“Hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, boating, reading history, travel.”

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in healthcare, what would it be?

“A career in health care can be the most fulfilling occupation of any.”

What’s the best advice you received?

“Always do what’s right.”

What’s one thing you wish every patient knew?

“That nearly all their medical problems are under their control and can be positively and substantially affected with life style changes.”

Dr. Ritchie’s passion for helping patients take control of their own health is exactly why he belongs at NMC Health. He understands that great healthcare is about more than just procedures; it’s about being a part of your life and your journey to wellness. We can’t wait for you to meet him.
