Diabetes Awareness & Planning for Healthy Holidays

November is National Diabetes month. Unfortunately, diabetes is becoming more common than ever. According to the CDC, diabetes now affects more than 37 million people in the US.

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, nerve damage and amputations. The great news to share is that people can live long, healthy, & productive lives with well controlled diabetes.

This year’s focus is on how today’s diabetes hits different. Different from before the COIVD-19 pandemic and even different risk factors & complications to look out for. But in 2022 we have new ways to hit back! Today there are new technology advances & better resources than ever to help educate ourselves and those we care for.

If you in any way feel stuck or frustrated with your diabetes management, the first step is to contact your doctor. Your doctor might suggest you also work with other care team members, like a diabetes educator, dietitian, podiatrist, ophthalmologist, pharmacist, or behavioral health counselor. You are not alone in this and support is just a phone call away.

We have 2 diabetes support group meetings left this year. I hope you can join us on November 10th as we start to think about the steps to take for great diabetes management this holiday season.

If you want more tips for living with your diabetes, we have you covered:

According to the 2021 Know Diabetes by Heart survey by the American Diabetes Association, nearly half (49%) of respondents said that managing their diabetes during the fall and winter holiday season was more difficult than during other times of the year. The biggest concern among those surveyed was trying to stay on track with their health goals during the holiday season. In this month’s meeting, we’ll dig deeper into what healthy diabetes management looks like during the holidays and share strategies to help you stay on track.

Please plan to join us for diabetes support group on Thursday November 10th. There is a virtual meeting at 11am via zoom and an in-person meeting at noon. If you are interested in attending either meeting, please call our office at 316-804-6147 or register below:
