Spreading Joy Through Music

When you think of a symphony orchestra, you probably picture musicians on stage and beautiful music. But behind the scenes, it takes a team of dedicated volunteers to make the music happen. One of those volunteers is Stephanie, a financial advocate at NMC Health, who takes her passion for service beyond the walls of healthcare, helping to keep the Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra (NMKSO) thriving and its music accessible to all.

Stephanie joined the orchestra board of directors because she loves trying new things. “I enjoy getting involved with any new projects that come my way,” she said. “I’m really thankful for this one. I appreciate the board for taking a chance on me and Val Gleason, NMC Health chief executive officer, for believing in me.”

More than a song

As someone who works in healthcare, Stephanie understands how music can do more than just sound beautiful. She has a deep love for all kinds of music and appreciates the beauty of the classical pieces. “It’s amazing to see people of all ages enjoying something so beautiful,” says Stephanie. “Music is a shared appreciation of the talent and the beauty of the art.”

As an NMKSO board member, Stephanie helps plan concerts, raise funds, and keep the music going strong. “This is a working board,” she says. “We all help with different duties. I’m on the fundraising committee, and we work hard to make sure the orchestra can keep playing for years to come.”

Helping the community

One of her favorite parts of her volunteer work is seeing how the symphony helps the whole community. At a recent concert, the board organized a “petting zoo” for instruments. Kids got to see – and even touch – real violins, trumpets, and more. “We hope it sparks a love for music in them.”

Stephanie and NMKSO also help make sure everyone has the chance to enjoy the music. “The Newton Public Library has two passes that can be checked out for each concert,” she said. If interested, please reach out to the library. Their next performance is Sunday, June 8, at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton.

“I’m really excited about Grace Notes on the Ranch,” she says. This event is an auction fundraiser for NMKSO. “There will be barbecue, music, and a live auction.” For more information, please contact NMKSO at 316-772-3265.

If Stephanie could inspire someone to support the arts, her message is simple: “Take a moment to admire the talent of the players and the years of hard work that made it all possible. It’s truly amazing.”

Whether in a hospital or at a concert, Stephanie is proof that healing can happen in more ways than one – and sometimes, all it takes is a song.
