Find your voice with NMC Health Speech Therapy

Let us help you find your voice through our speech therapy services at NMC Health Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation. Whether you’re suffering from the effects of Parkinson’s Disease, a stroke or other language and speech issues, our compassionate speech therapists are here for you.

What is speech therapy?

Speech therapy is a branch of therapy that focuses on evaluating and diagnosing speech, language, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders. Think of speech therapy as physical therapy for your voice.

If you wake up with hoarseness or “lose” your voice for an extended period of time, a speech therapist (speech language pathologist) can help you get it back. They can also help you speak more clearly.

What we treat

Our expert team of speech therapists treat a range of disorders in patients of all ages. We provide inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitation speech therapy service for babies, toddlers, children, teenagers and adults.

Here’s a list of commonly treated conditions:

  • LVST LOUD for Parkinson’s Disease – helps with speaking more clearly and loudly
  • Dysphagia in adults – helps with swallowing issues
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Communication difficulties
  • Voice retraining
  • Feeding and swallowing problems for infants and children
  • Developmental delays
  • Laryngeal and oral cancers
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and stroke
  • Voice disorders
  • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

What to expect

When you’re referred to speech therapy, you will be evaluated by one of our expert speech language pathologists (speech therapists). They will then create a therapy plan customized to meet your needs and goals.

The length of your time with speech therapy will depend on your progress. Ready to get your voice back?

If you have a medical emergency, call 911 or visit the NMC Health Medical Center Emergency Department.

LSVT LOUD

LSVT LOUD is an effective treatment for speech disorders associated with people with Parkinson’s disease. It focuses on increasing vocal loudness and is delivered by our speech therapist over an intense four-week treatment period.

LSVT LOUD helps “recalibrate” the patient’s perceptions on their vocal loudness, so they feel comfortable using a strong voice at normal loudness level to communicate effectively.

FAQs

Yes. Most health insurance plans should cover speech therapy. You will have to have a referral from your doctor in order to see a speech language pathologist.

If you have specific questions about whether your insurance covers speech therapy at NMC Health Therapy & Rehabilitation, please contact your insurance provider first. You can also look to see if your insurance plan is covered at NMC Health.

Speech therapy can help people who have suffered a stroke or who deal with communication, speech and language issues. If you feel you can’t communicate well or your voice is a hinderance, speech therapy might be for you.

Here are some of the benefits of speech therapy:

  • Fluent speech
  • Better self-esteem
  • More independence
  • Social skills development
  • Improved vocal quality and sound
  • Improved swallowing
  • More easily understood by others
  • Better quality of life
  • Better hearing
  • Better reading comprehension
  • Reduced risk of choking

The type of treatment during your speech therapy session depends on the reason for you being in speech therapy. For instance, if your child is going through speech therapy, the speech therapist will interact with them through play and work on social skills and language skills. They might work on colors and flash cards and focus on the sounds words make.

If you’re in speech therapy working through the LSVT LOUD program for Parkinson’s Disease, you’ll use exaggerated sounds to help make your voice easier to understand by others.
