Last Tuesday, April 24, Newton Medical Center (NMC) hosted a luncheon for the Newton Medical Center Community Association (NMCCA). An annual event, the luncheon serves as an opportunity to formally thank the NMCCA for their work at the hospital.

“Our volunteers are an invaluable asset to Newton Medical Center,” said Val Gleason, NMC president and CEO. “They are the smiling face people see when entering the hospital, are always willing to assist patients, families and visitors. In addition, the association is a major financial contributor to the hospital’s ability to serve the community.”

Throughout the year, the NMCCA hosts fundraising events, such as a scrub sale, book sale and jewelry sale. This money is later gifted to the hospital to fulfill a wish list provided by hospital departments. These gifts are chosen at the discretion of the NMCCA.

This year, NMCCA president Cheryl Williams presented a check to the hospital for $21,960, the highest amount ever raised by the organization. Gifts purchased with this money include: a blanket warmer for the Generations Unit; wheelchairs, a balance system and a device used for stroke rehabilitation; Vapotherm, a technology used to avoid invasive ventilation for respiratory therapy; and home sleep testing equipment for the hospital’s sleep lab.
