Every baby deserves the best possible start — every time. At NMC Health, we’re working to make that happen right here in rural Kansas.
Did you know that between 2022 and 2024, NMC Health delivered 1,515 babies? These new families came from 102 zip codes and 29 counties across Kansas. Wow!
What’s alarming, is that nearly half of all Kansas counties are now considered maternity care deserts. This forces families to travel long distances for prenatal and delivery care. These gaps in care increase the risk of complications. These higher risks place tremendous pressure on the hospitals that continue to offer labor and delivery services.
At the same time, labor and delivery nurses are in short supply nationwide. And, when every delivery is unique and often unpredictable the challenge is magnified.
Exciting News!
NMC Health is filling these needs with the creation of a Maternal-Child Simulation Lab and Training Room. This will be a hands-on learning space where nurses, doctors, EMS teams, and other rural providers. With the use of modern technology, they can practice life-saving skills before they’re needed most. This lab will strengthen our local workforce. It will serve as a regional training hub, helping more families receive expert care without leaving their community.
Our regional reach shows just how vital NMC Health is to rural Kansas moms and babies. It also shows why continued investment in maternity services is essential for the future of our region.
