Why are you excited to join NMC Health?
“I am excited to join NMC Health because of its strong commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate, patient-centered care. What drew me to this organization is the culture of collaboration and innovation – it’s clear that NMC Health values teamwork and continuous growth, which are qualities I deeply respect. I look forward to contributing to NMC Health and working alongside colleagues who share the same passion for improving patients’ lives. Being part of a health system invested in the community is an honor, and I am eager to grow my career here while helping patients achieve the best possible outcomes.”
Why did you choose to have a career in healthcare?
“I chose a career in healthcare because I wanted to combine my love of science with my desire to serve others in a meaningful way. From the beginning of my nursing journey, I was drawn to the privilege of caring for people during some of their most vulnerable moments. Over the past 13 years, healthcare has allowed me to continually grow, learn, and connect with others on a human level. Becoming a nurse practitioner has given me the opportunity to expand my scope of practice and to make an even greater impact, both through medical expertise and through compassion.”
What is your specialty and why did you choose it?
“My specialty is neurology. I was drawn to this field because it challenges me to think critically and engage in complex problem-solving. The brain and nervous system are fascinating, and neurology allows me to work with both acute conditions and chronic illnesses that profoundly affect patients’ daily lives. I am also intrigued by the use of advanced technologies that help us better understand and treat neurological conditions. Most importantly, I chose neurology because it gives me the opportunity to develop long-term relationships with patients, guiding them through some of the most significant challenges they may face and helping them preserve or improve their quality of life.”
What inspires you to do what you do every day?
“I am inspired every day by the resilience of my patients. Witnessing their strength in the face of difficult diagnoses motivates me to bring my best to each encounter. I am also inspired by the ever-evolving field of medicine. There is always something new to learn—whether it’s advances in technology, new treatment options, or deeper insights into the human body—and that constant growth drives me to be a better provider. The combination of patient resilience and the pursuit of lifelong learning keeps me passionate about my work.”
What is your favorite thing about working with patients?
“My favorite part of working with patients is building meaningful relationships with them. I enjoy taking the time to learn about who they are beyond their diagnosis—their families, their interests, their goals—and using that knowledge to create a care plan that fits their life. I find it rewarding when patients feel comfortable opening up, knowing they are not just being treated as a “case” but as a whole person. Those personal connections are what make this work fulfilling and remind me of the privilege it is to be trusted with someone’s health.”
What is your top priority when providing healthcare
“My top priority is to deliver safe, evidence-based, and compassionate care while treating each patient with respect and dignity. I believe that listening is one of the most important parts of being a healthcare provider. By truly hearing patients’ concerns, understanding their goals, and involving them in the decision-making process, I can ensure that the care we provide is both effective and meaningful. My goal is always to make patients feel valued, supported, and empowered throughout their healthcare journey.”
What are your favorite things to do outside of the office?
“Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our three children, and our dog. Family time is very important to me, and we love to be outdoors together—whether it’s hiking, gardening, or exploring new places while traveling. I find that being in nature helps me recharge and find balance. Gardening is especially rewarding because it gives me time to reflect while nurturing something that grows, and traveling allows me to experience new cultures, food, and perspectives that enrich my life.”
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in healthcare, what would it be?
“My advice would be to lead with compassion and curiosity. Healthcare can be challenging, both physically and emotionally, but if you keep empathy at the center of everything you do, it will be one of the most rewarding careers imaginable. At the same time, stay curious and open to lifelong learning. Medicine is always evolving, and the ability to adapt and grow will not only make you a stronger provider but also ensure your patients are receiving the best care possible.”
What’s the best advice you received?
“The best advice I’ve received is to “never stop learning.” Early in my career, a mentor reminded me that medicine is a field that will always change, and the best providers are those who remain humble, curious, and eager to grow. That mindset has carried me through every step of my journey as a nurse and now as a nurse practitioner. It reminds me that I don’t have to know everything, but I do have to be willing to keep learning for the sake of my patients.”
What’s one thing you wish every patient knew?
“I wish every patient knew that they are not alone in their healthcare journey. It can feel overwhelming to face a new diagnosis or manage a chronic condition, but providers are here to walk alongside them, advocate for them, and support them every step of the way. I also wish patients understood how important their voice is in the process. Their questions, concerns, and perspectives are essential to building a care plan that truly works for them. They are the most important member of their healthcare team, and their input matters.”
Veronica’s dedication to patient-centered care shines through everything she does—from her commitment to collaborating with colleagues to her insistence that the patient is the most important member of their own healthcare team. Her advice to lead with compassion and curiosity is a mindset we are proud to embrace here at NMC Health. We are delighted that Veronica has chosen to grow her career within our health system, and we look forward to the expertise and empathy she will bring to her patients in neurology. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Veronica Vittitoe, APRN!
