More Than a Mentor: Home Care Director Makes Impact

“I missed working with kids.”

That’s what Stephanie, operations director of NMC Health Home Care and Private Duty, realized not long ago. She’d wanted to help out in children’s ministries at her large church, but she prefers one-one-one interaction.

So when someone mentioned Big Brothers Big Sisters, she paused. One-on-one time? Meaningful connection? Flexible enough to work with her schedule? Yes, yes, and yes.

Now, she’s officially a Big Sister. Or, as her Little Sister calls her, Sissy.

While their match is still fresh, she and her Little Sister are already making memories: grabbing ice cream, swimming at the Greater Wichita YMCA, and playing at the park. “She’s the queen of cartwheels,” she says. “And more ice cream will definitely be eaten!”

But it’s not just about fun. It’s about showing up.

“As a Big, I get to be a friend. I get to focus on making sure my Little is having a good time, regardless of what else is going on in her life. I hope My Little sees that someone cares about her and wants to invest in her and see her succeed.”

When asked what she’d tell others thinking about volunteering, her answer is simple: “Most of us have more time than we realize to invest somewhere, even if it’s volunteering for something small or infrequent. Sometimes it is hard, but it is always worth it!”

Sometimes, giving your time gives you something even bigger in return.
