A Nurse with a Heart for Helping

Heather has always been someone who cares for others. As a nurse at NMC Health Surgical Specialists, she has spent years helping patients feel better. But her kindness doesn’t stop at the hospital doors—she recently took on a new role as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), hoping to make a difference in a child’s life.

Heather started working at NMC Health in 2012. She began as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), then became a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in the clinic, and later earned her Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Finding a new way to give back

Heather always wanted to give back to her community but didn’t know where to start. Then, at a fall festival at her children’s school, she noticed a booth for Big Brothers Big Sisters. She struck up a conversation with a BBBS advocate, and suddenly, she felt something inside telling her: “Do this.”

Heather had worked with children before and missed it. She knew she wanted to make a positive impact on a young person’s future.

Heather is just getting started as a Big Sister—she was matched with her Little earlier this year! Though she’s still new to the program, she’s already excited about the experiences ahead. She plans to eat lunch with her Little every week and hopes to do fun activities together over the summer.

Why volunteering matters

Heather believes that stronger communities start with connection. As a nurse, she sees every day how important it is to support and care for people. She hopes her role as a Big Sister will give her a better understanding of what kids in her community need.

“I believe when you can be closer to the community, you have a stronger understanding of what is going on out there,” she says. “Communities need each other to grow and flourish. As a nurse, I’m drawn to helping people, and I hope this is a way to provide guidance and knowledge for those that need it.”

Looking back, she remembers working as a paraprofessional at an elementary school and how just listening to kids made a huge difference. She hopes to bring that same kindness and understanding to her Little, knowing that sometimes, all a child needs is someone to talk to.

Thinking about volunteering? Here's Heather's advice

“If you’re thinking about volunteering, ask yourself: What kind of good do I want to bring to the world? There are so many ways to help. If something speaks to you, go for it!”

Heather’s story is just beginning, but she’s already proving that a little kindness can go a long way. Whether she’s caring for patients, guiding her Little, or simply listening, she’s making the world a better place—one small act of kindness at a time.
