Regain Your Voice and Movement

A stroke can change your life in an instant. It can make everyday tasks, like talking to a loved one or walking across the room, feel like a massive challenge. But your brain has an amazing ability to heal and relearn. At NMC Health, we offer two highly effective, special programs called LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG to help stroke survivors regain their independence.

What are LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG?

These are specialized therapy programs designed to “reset” the way your brain talks to your muscles. While they were first made for Parkinson’s disease, doctors now know they work incredibly well for stroke recovery, too.

LSVT LOUD (Speech Therapy):

After a stroke, your voice might sound soft, mumbled, or raspy. This program trains you to use a stronger, louder voice so family and friends can easily understand you.

LSVT BIG (Physical or Occupational Therapy):

A stroke can make your movements small, slow, or choppy. This program trains your body to make bigger, bolder movements so you can walk safer and use your hands better.

Our Main Areas of Focus

Our certified therapists use these programs to help you rewrite the rules of your recovery, focusing on the skills you need for daily life.

  • Speaking
  • Swallowing
  • Walking
  • Balance
  • Daily tasks, like getting out of bed, buttoning a shirt, styling your hair, or using a fork

What to Expect During Treatment

The LSVT programs are intensive because that is how the brain learns best.

For both programs, you will work directly with a certified therapist for every single session, typically four days a week for four weeks. You will be given simple exercises to practice at home, keeping your progress moving forward between visits. By the end of the month, you will likely see a major boost in how loud you can speak and how well you can move.

If you have a medical emergency, call 911 or visit the NMC Health Medical Center Emergency Department.

FAQs

After a stroke, your brain might think you are speaking at a normal volume when you are actually whispering. LSVT LOUD trains you to bring your voice up to a healthy, normal level. It is not about yelling; it is about retraining your brain to know what a normal voice feels like.

It is hard work, but it is safe. Your therapist will change the movements to match your current ability. The goal is simply to push your body to move as “big” as it safely can, which forces your nervous system to build new paths.

Yes. Because stroke recovery requires a highly coordinated care plan, we do need a referral from your physician or neurologist to start either the LOUD or BIG programs.

Yes. At NMC Health, these treatments are only done by licensed speech, physical, or occupational therapists. They have gone through advanced, specialized training to earn their LSVT certifications.
