Prepare for Surgery and Heal Faster

Having surgery can feel scary, but you do not have to go through recovery alone. Whether you need a new joint, have a sports injury, or need spine surgery, how you prepare and heal matters a lot. At NMC Health, our physical therapy team is here to help you build strength before surgery and move safely afterward.

What is Pre-Operative Therapy?

Many people do not know that physical therapy can start before your surgery date. We call this “pre-hab.” This step focuses on building up the muscles around your hurt joint while you wait for your operation.

Our Main Areas of Focus

We change your care plan based on your exact surgery. Our team works close with your doctor so you can heal well.

  • Before Surgery: We build your strength and teach you safe ways to move. We can also practice using crutches, a walker, or a cane.
  • Right After Surgery: We help you handle pain and swelling while slowly getting your movement back. We guide you through the exact steps your body needs to heal safely.
  • Long-Term Healing: Once your cuts heal, we focus on your balance and strength. This helps you get back to work, hobbies, and your daily life.

Surgeries We Frequently Treat Through Post Operative Therapy

Our certified therapists have extensive experience helping patients recover from many types of surgery, including:

  • Joint replacements (like hips or knees)
  • Ligament and tendon repairs
  • Spine surgeries
  • Fixing broken bones with pins, plates, or screws

What to Expect

We work with your surgeon to ensure a safe and complete recovery.

  • First, we check your strength and movement before surgery. We give you a few simple exercises to do at home.
  • Next, right after surgery, we use gentle movements to help blood flow, lower swelling, and stop stiffness.
  • Then, as you heal, we add new exercises to help you get your full strength back.
  • Finally, we finish by making sure you can safely do daily tasks, like walking up stairs or going back to work.

FAQs

Studies show that patients who do “pre-hab” often have less pain and shorter hospital stays. They also get back to normal life faster. It gives you a chance to meet your therapist and learn your moves ahead of time. This takes away a lot of stress on surgery day.

This depends on your exact surgery and your doctor’s rules. For a new knee, doctors often want you to start therapy a day or two after you leave the hospital. For other surgeries, you may need to wait a few weeks to rest. We work directly with your doctor to find the best start date.

It is preferred. Your doctor’s referral provides your therapist information about what surgery you had. Your doctor’s office usually sends us this note on their own. If not, our team is happy to help you handle the paperwork.
