Stop the Dizziness and Stand Steady with Balance Therapy
Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or like the room is spinning can be scary. It makes simple things like getting out of bed, driving, or walking down the hall feel dangerous. At NMC Health, our physical therapists have special training to find out why you are losing your balance. We help reset your body and brain through balance therapy so you can feel steady on your feet again.
What is Vestibular Therapy?
Your vestibular system is located in your inner ear. It acts like a tiny level, telling your brain where your head is and keeping your eyes steady when you look around.
If this system gets damaged or thrown off, your brain gets mixed-up signals. This can make you feel dizzy, off-balance, or sick to your stomach. Vestibular therapy uses gentle, targeted exercises to retrain your brain and fix those signals.
Conditions We Treat
Our team uses special tests to find the exact cause of your balance issues. We frequently treat:
- Vertigo (BPPV): This happens when tiny, natural “crystals” inside your ear shift out of place. It causes a sudden, intense spinning feeling when you tilt your head or roll over in bed.
- Inner Ear Infections (Vestibular Neuritis): Swelling or infections in the inner ear that can cause sudden, severe dizziness that lasts for days.
- Concussions: Head injuries from a fall, accident, or sports hit that upset your brain-body connections, causing long-lasting dizziness.
- Meniere’s Disease: A long-term inner ear problem that causes random attacks of spinning, ringing in your ears, and hearing loss.
What to Expect During Treatment
We start by finding out exactly what triggers your dizziness so we can treat it safely.
- We test your balance, how you walk, and how your eyes move when we turn your head.
- For vertigo, we use specific head movements to gently guide loose ear crystals back where they belong. For other issues, we do tracking exercises to stop your eyes from bouncing when you move.
- We practice walking safely on different surfaces to build your confidence and leg strength.
- We give you easy exercises to do at home. Practicing a few minutes a day helps your brain adapt much faster.

FAQs
During your first checkup, some movements might trigger your dizziness for a brief moment. This is normal and helps us see exactly what is wrong. Our therapists stay right by your side to keep you safe and supported. Many patients feel major relief after just a few visits.
If your dizziness is caused by loose ear crystals (BPPV), you might feel completely better in just 1 to 3 visits. Recovery from a concussion or an inner ear infection takes a bit more time because we have to retrain the brain, which usually takes a few weeks.
You can call us directly to set up a balance checkup without a doctor’s note. However, because some insurance providers require a referral to pay for your visits, we will gladly check your benefits before you arrive.
