Finding a physician who truly listens to you makes all the difference in your healthcare. That is why we are excited to welcome Brittany Love, MD, to the team at NMC Health. As a general surgeon, Dr. Love combines expert surgical skills with a warm, family-focused approach to care. After living several states away, she is excited to be back in Kansas, living close to her family, and serving our community. Read our quick interview below to learn about her background, her love for surgery, and what drives her every day.
Why are you excited to join NMC Health?
I’m excited to join NMC Health for multiple reasons. The organization truly cares for patients as well as its employees. The facility is large enough to provide the latest in healthcare technology but small enough that you are able to build a relationship with your providers. And finally, after years of being hours and even states away, I’m now just an hour’s drive away from family.
Why did you choose to have a career in healthcare?
When I was in high school and trying to figure out what I wanted to be “when I grew up,” I knew I wanted a career where I could make the biggest difference for the most people using the gift I was given. I loved school, I loved science, and I loved people. Healthcare made sense.
What is your specialty and why did you choose it?
When I started medical school, I had no intention of becoming a surgeon. But two weeks into my surgical rotation, I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. You often hear that you don’t choose surgery but rather it chooses you, and that rings true in my case. I like general surgery because I get to do a little bit of everything.
What inspires you to do what you do every day?
I genuinely enjoy my work. I get to make a tangible difference in people’s lives every day.
What is your favorite thing about working with patients?
I enjoy getting to know my patients and their families. Some of my favorite appointments are when the whole family comes in and I’ve cared for several generations.
What is your top priority when providing healthcare?
I want my patients to leave my office knowing that their concerns have been heard. I also prioritize educating my patients so they understand the plan moving forward and why I have made the recommendations that I have.
What are your favorite things to do outside of the office?
I enjoy spending time with my large family (4 younger siblings and soon to be 11 nieces and nephews), working out, working out in the yard, and snuggling with my dog.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in healthcare, what would it be?
Healthcare will be one of the most challenging of professions but also the most rewarding. Spend time shadowing in several different areas. You will find a place that you seem to just “fit in.”
What’s the best advice you received?
If you can imagine yourself doing anything but surgery, do that. I couldn’t, so here I am, loving my life as a general surgeon.
What’s one thing you wish every patient knew?
I think about my patients ALL THE TIME. When I’m driving home, I’m formulating a plan for a patient on the schedule for tomorrow’s clinic. When I’m falling asleep, I’m thinking about the patient I admitted after surgery. When I’m with my family, I’m stressed about a patient in the ICU. I genuinely want the best for each person I care for and will do what it takes to provide the best outcome I can.
Dr. Love puts her whole heart into caring for others. Her commitment to listening to patients and keeping them informed makes her a wonderful addition to NMC Health. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Brittany Love to NMC Health!
